Kevin Huffaker
Sculptor/ Builder/ Artist
I’ve made art as long as I can remember. I have created in ceramic, bronze, plastics, paper, music, steel, drawing, and writing, and I continually add new materials and processes to my experience.
I made a bronze sculpture of a monkey sitting on top of an anvil hammering his tail, shaping himself through the process of creativity. It became my creative icon.
My sense of humor runs deep. I regard myself as part of an ongoing primitive analogy, experiencing the evolution of my own awareness and marking time with sculptural revelations that manifest as monkeys more often than not. I enjoy following new ideas that investigate self-perception and the "human condition," and I gravitate towards using monkeys in those depictions. It’s an opposable-thumb-kinda-thing -- you may understand.
In contrast to my depth of humor, I don’t turn my head away from the horrible or grotesque – I simply don’t limit myself to any one pattern of experience. I believe if we can imagine it, we can create it. I believe everything is worth looking at, not just the attractive aspects of this world.
The most significant facet of my creative life are the people I have come to know and love--friends and artists. I am guilty of collecting them like precious gems. We collaborate by default, and their individual creativity is a constant source of inspiration to me. Without these relationships of other like-minded human beings, I would experience a one-sided understanding of my personal contribution to the world. It's through community and sharing I truly understand how to comment honestly with my ideas and art. The people I have come to know and love provide the real material that I work with.
